Chapter 14

Sage scanned the big house as she exited the car. It wasn’t quite as large as Mason’s home, but still a lot bigger than most.

Eden and Shylah had invited them over for dinner. Sage was excited but her anticipation was tinged with nerves. She and Mason had been on a handful of dates. So technically they were dating, although they hadn’t said that word out loud.

That meant that tonight was a double date. A double date with the perfect couple, Eden and Shylah.

“You don’t need to be nervous,” Mason whispered once he was standing beside her. Taking her hand in his, he led them to the front door.

The couple lived a bit farther out of town. Sage had gotten the brief rundown from Mason. Basically, Shylah and Eden had been dating when the guys were at Project Arma, but when the program had been shut down, Shylah had gone missing. That had left Eden angry at the world and needing to be away from people.

Even if you weren’t mad at the world, Sage understood the appeal of living a bit farther out. It was peaceful. There wasn’t a neighbor in sight.

Mason raised his hand and knocked on the door. A few seconds passed before they were greeted by Shylah. “Sage, Mason, hello! Welcome! Come in.”

Sage stepped forward and gave the other woman a hug. Then she took in the interior. Good lord, the house was amazing.

The ceilings were high with striking black pendant lighting and the entrance led to an open floor plan. A huge modern kitchen sat to the left of the room and opened to dining and living areas. And there was no way she could miss the big grand staircase in front of her against the wall.

It was nice. Very nice. Just like Mason’s home. When she stopped to think about it, all the men had beautiful homes.

Mason left for the kitchen, but Sage remained, still taking it in.

Shylah took a step closer. “Gorgeous, isn’t it?”

Gorgeous was an understatement.

Sage couldn’t help but voice her thoughts. “They all have such beautiful homes.”

Shylah was already nodding. “The guys got big payouts in compensation from the government after Project Arma shut down. You know, so they wouldn’t sue and would keep quiet. More than enough for their business and to live comfortably.”

That was news to Sage. Although, it wasn’t a surprise. They deserved some form of compensation after what happened.

Shylah linked her arm through Sage’s and led them to the kitchen. Eden and Mason stood by the counter, already holding beers.

Eden gave her a nod. “Hey, Sage. Drink?”

“Just a water would be wonderful.”

Eden pushed off the counter and moved toward the fridge.

Sage wasn’t a big drinker. Being a doctor, she liked to keep a clear head. The other night at the bar had been the exception. And even then, two had felt like too many.

Shylah went to the oven and when she pulled it open, the room filled with the most delicious aroma.

Sage eyed the contents of the oven. “My god, Shylah, that smells amazing.
